A Candy Cane Christmas Under the Sun

There is something so nostalgic about a classic red-and-white Christmas, isn't there? Those candy-cane stripes take me straight back to childhood... unwrapping presents at some ungodly hour of the morning, the smell of baking and the sounds of whipping for the fresh pavlova, kids running around barefoot in the backyard, and the whole family relaxing into that lazy summer Christmas feeling.

This year, I wanted to bring that nostalgia to life with a simple, fun, totally kid-friendly outdoor Christmas table using my Chyka Home Christmas collection for Harris Scarfe. This range is playful, graphic and unapologetically festive — the kind of collection that doesn't take itself too seriously and absolutely screams Christmas in the best way possible.

Let's talk about the table! Instead of a formal, sit-down feast, I've mixed things up with a casual outdoor table setting. Think: white and red stripes, bold patterns, pops of red, and pieces that feel happy the moment you unpack them ( hello tin soldier, I'm looking at you!!). This look is about joy, ease and affordability, a reminder that Christmas doesn't need to be overcomplicated to be beautiful.

The striped plates, sweet little bowls, and coordinating napery create a bold but simple statement. A few scattered ornaments, some red glassware, and a centrepiece of greenery or candy-stripe ribbons instantly turn the backyard into a festive wonderland. It's relaxed, it's bright, and, most importantly, the kids love it. Because not every Christmas table has to be a formal dining moment. Some years call for fresh air, sunshine and a little creative thinking.

Five fun and magical reasons to take

your guests outside for Christmas dessert….

It creates a Second Moment of Magic.

Moving everyone outside after lunch is like revealing a new chapter of the day. You've set the scene inside… and now there's a whole new space dressed for Christmas. It keeps the energy flowing and adds that sense of surprise.

A Dessert Table Kids Will Talk About for Years

Give the kids their very own dessert wonderland…layered trifles, bowls of berries, giant jars of lollies, mini pavlovas, candy canes, and ice-cream sandwiches. Let them build their own plates and have fun with them. A kids-only dessert zone? They'll feel like VIPs.

More Space, Less Stress

Outdoor settings are naturally more relaxed. Spills? No problem. Sticky fingers? Easy. Running around between treats? Absolutely encouraged. You can style it beautifully without worrying about every crumb.

Light, Colour and a Whole Lot of Atmosphere

Christmas in Australia is full of sunshine, long days and warm breezes, why not use them? The candy-cane stripes pop brilliantly outside, and your table styling suddenly feels bigger, brighter and more joyful.

It Makes Entertaining Feel Fresh and Playful

Using multiple locations around the house — inside for the main meal, outside for dessert — breaks up the day and makes your home feel like an event space. It's creative, affordable and adds a sense of movement and celebration.
