Getting into the Spooky Spirit…

There's something about Halloween that just brings out the inner child in all of us, isn't there? Whether it's the chance to dress up, decorate, or eat way too many lollies, it's one of those nights that's all about fun, family and a little bit of fright. My kids may be older and living out of the home, but boy, do I love any excuse to pull out the spooky décor and start planning a fun little night in...
You all know I never need much convincing to go all-in on a theme, but what I love most about Halloween is how it encourages everyone to play along. It's not about perfection or big budgets; it's about creating a bit of magic (and mischief!) with what you already have. So search through those cupboards, pull out any items you can creatively 'spookify' because this year, instead of heading out, why not host a Halloween family night in? Pop on your favourite spooky playlist, pull together some easy themed food, and transform your dining table into a black-and-orange masterpiece.
Let's start with the food, because we all know that's where the fun really begins. In past years, I have gone crazy with Halloween cocktails, set up spooktacular outdoor dining tables, cooked delicious black squid ink linguine and crafted many trick-or-treats, but this year I am simplifying it all. I had some black burger rolls made by a local bakery (they were more than happy to do it!) that made such a statement on the table. Fill them with your favourite sandwich or burger mix or even simple meatballs and cheese (call them monster sliders and you've nailed the brief!) Add some purple potato fries on the side for that perfect Halloween hue, and you've got yourself a meal that's festive, simple, and absolutely delicious.
TOP TIP! Don’t want to offer small, packaged treats to your guests? Unwrap it all and make a delicious chocolate-focused platter. Mix in a few berries for a healthy refresher. Think pretzels, chocolate balls, rocky road, anything that has an odd shape and looks interesting on your board!
When it comes to table styling, don't overthink it. Stick to two, classic yet intense colours for maximum impact: Black & Orange. A black tablecloth, or even a large piece of black fabric, can instantly set the tone. Layer in orange napkins, candles, or pumpkins (real or faux? Whatever you have on hand; mine are from Spotlight). I love adding a bit of texture with branches, cobwebs, or even a few battery-operated candles for that moody glow. And if you've got kids, let them help with the setup. They'll love being part of the process, and it's a lovely way to make memories together.
The best part? You don't need to spend a fortune. Halloween décor can be handmade from everyday items. For example, think old jars turned into lanterns, cut-out paper bats on the walls, or a few dramatic blooms from the garden popped into a vase. Keep it simple, keep it fun, and most importantly, make it yours. Because for me, entertaining has always been about creating moments. Whether it's a glamorous dinner party or a simple family night in, it's those shared laughs and thoughtful touches that make it special. So grab your broomsticks, pop on a witch's hat, light those candles, and get ready for a night of laughs, spooky snacks, and family fun. After all, Halloween is the perfect excuse to embrace a little mischief and magic... no tricks, just treats!
