Styling Your Fireplace With Candles

Breathe new life into inactive fireplaces by styling them with candles with Winter.

Filling a fireplace with brown candles is a styling trick I adore. Groups of candles, all varying in height and width with gorgeous melted candle wax dripping down the edges forming one big lumpy mess of waxy goodness!  Surrounding your fireplace with groups of candles is an easy way of using your fireplace and creating that gorgeous glow without burning wood! Perfect for closed in chimneys. I have chosen to use Provincial Home Living's Taupe Pillar Candles.

In other parts of the house I also use dark toned candles because sometimes a white candle can just be too stark. As the seasons change, so should your candles. Everything in winter just needs to feel beautiful and easy - like it always been there. But like anything to do with a naked flame - be careful! Never leave candles unattended, never burn them near curtains or anything even close to flammable and never burn them near children.

There are so many candle scents to choose these days, it is so easy to explore the smells you like. For winter, I like to change things up inside my home and introduce earthy, spicier smells. I am obsessed with warm tones like Amber and Oud as its a smell that can be layered up with other fragrances. These are not cheap but the smell is amazing and will last longer - like good perfume, investing in a good candle is worth it!

Favourite scents for Winter::

  • Diptyque - Amber and Feu Bois
  • Cire Trvdon- Ernesto
  • Tom Dixon - London
  • Byredo - Loose lips
  • Paddy Wax Apothecary - Amber and Smoke

How to make your candles last longer::

  1. On the first burn, keep it lit for 2-3 hours. Wax has a ‘memory’ and you want an even burn on the candle, this also effects the scent throw. The more even the burn, the better the smell.
  2. Avoid black soot on your jars by trimming the wick to 1/4” before burning. If your candle starts to flick, extinguish the flame and let cool for a few hours, trim then relight.
  3. Always keep your wick centred and burn your candles on an even surface.
  4. Re-use your candle jar. Wash it out in hot soapy water and repurpose it.
  5. It’s best to trim your wick with a proper trimmer, not only are they cool looking utensils but you won’t ruin the wick of your candle!
