Exploring Beautiful Port Douglas

WORDS: CHYKA KEEBAUGH

We are so incredibly lucky in Australia…

…I mean, sure, we can’t travel outside our own country for leisure at the moment, but we have so many unique and amazing places to discover right here in our backyard; the options are endless. I was lucky enough to spend a week in beautiful Port Douglas not so long ago and loved being back in the place I haven’t been to for nearly 12 years. I can honestly say that not much has changed; it is still as gorgeous and laid back as it can be; it is full of smiling faces and beautiful beaches. Still, the town itself remains the same as my fond memories of it.

After flying into Cairns, Port Douglas is a 45-minute car drive. There is so much to explore in this beautiful part of the world. FYI, hiring a car is essential; there are so many people trying to do this at the moment, so as soon as you book your trip - book your car! The beaches are truly incredible in Far North Queensland. Walking along those every morning with the sea on one side and rainforest on the other is very special. The sand is as white as the ocean is blue, and seriously, that to me is pure heaven.

First Stop!

On the way to Port Douglas is the cute little town of Palm Cove. It is literally one street and has the most beautiful beaches, and is a great place to stay. We loved wandering about, taking in all that Palm Cove has to offer and made our day just that little bit brighter by eating at a beautiful beachfront restaurant named Nu Nu, one not to miss, I promise you! We also travelled through Oak Beach, which is home to Oak’s Kitchen. I had heard many good things about this cooking school and garden, but our timing was off, and they were fully booked, so I have made a note to get there next time I am in Far North Queensland.

There is plenty of accommodation in Port Douglas but like everything to do with travel at the moment - you need to make a plan, cross your fingers and book ahead! We actually rented a house for the week, which was fantastic as it meant we could cook our own food, relax and then head out whenever we wanted.

Our Favourite Places to eat in Port Douglas

Sparrows have the best coffee and what’s even better is that you can message in your order and pick it up. Loved this service so much and knowing that I can get up, get dressed and walk down to pick up the perfect coffee made just for me = heaven!

The Little Larder was my favourite spot for a delicious breakfast, brunch and quick drink. Perfect spot to sit back and indulge in something delish!

Nautilis hands down have the most romantic set-up in the middle of palms and ferns and I am here for it! It is one of the most beautiful and iconic restaurants in Australia and I am so glad we got to visit. Opening days vary and bookings are essential so make sure you check their socials before you go.

Salsa is a great spot to stop and eat. Nice and breezy, great food and a delicious cocktail menu.

Maman was my favourite place to eat in Port Douglas. Hands down. It offers a delicious combination of Meditteranean and Middle Eastern bites all made from local and organic produce. This is one of those restaurants you will dream about - book in and go!

Zinc was another favourite due to its great food and fun bar. Close to Four Mile Beach, this iconic restaurant has a huge alfresco dining area to take advantage of the sea breeze but also a cute interior for a romantic dinner. Bookings are a must so make sure to plan ahead.

Time for adventure

Having spent time in Port Douglas before, we left many tourist routes alone. Still, there is so much to do and see in the area - if we had more time, we definitely would have ventured out more. Port Douglas and regions of Far North Queensland have to be seen to be believed. The weather, the glorious tropical plants, the homes, everything about it was such a breath of fresh air. I feel so lucky that we could squeeze this little adventure in before yet another lockdown here in Melbourne.
