How can you turn one straightforward sponge cake into a gorgeous work of art? That’s easy, with a doily!

Now, this is a little project I have been dying to try out, and I finally found the occasion. The effect that a little piece of paper and a sprinkling of icing sugar can have is something can be done by anybody - regardless of how skilled in the kitchen, you think you are! I think that this is the perfect way to add a little vavoom to your baking and it doesn’t have to be on a cake; it would be equally as effective using a smaller lace doily on muffins, or even sprinkling cocoa through a doily on a chocolate slice. Get creative, get messy and let’s have some fun!

How to decorate a lace doily cake…

  1. Place your doily on top of your (cooked and cooled) cake.

  2. Sprinkle with sifted icing sugar.

  3. Carefully peel back your doily, be careful not to shake it.

But what cake should you try it out on?

An orange cake, a heavy sprinkling of icing sweetens this moist cake.

A bundt marble cake is a perfect cake to try a dusting of cocoa powder over the doily keeping chocolate the hero of this family favorite.

This crowd-pleaser could shine with a little artistic flair. A simple blueberry cake that is so quick and easy to make.
