Food is so important in our lives and making a meal for someone can show how much you care for them, the same goes with making special meals for yourself. Self-care is a buzz word I am happy to indulge in, and making special healthy meals is a way I can take care of myself. Spring is a great time to start afresh - whether that be kickstarting your day with a delicious juice or even something as simple as taking an evening walk after dinner to enjoy the longer days.

Acai and smoothie bowls are still a popular way to start the day. Used for their high antioxidant content, acai berries could have benefits for your brain, heart and overall health by delivering healthy fats and fibre. These are a gorgeous looking breakfast or post-exercise snack. Topped with a colourful array of nuts, fruits, and edible greens. A smoothie bowl is something we can all start the day off with, its simple, fresh and delicious. Be sure to balance out your bowl with fruit and nuts, as too much fruit can mean too much sugar, so be sure your bowl is balanced.

NO TIME TO CREATE A BOWL? MAKE IT AS A SMOOTHIE!

The first meal of the day is the most important so let’s make sure we get it right. Time to move on from the winter stodginess and get into some fun, fresh spring goodness. Cutting up fruit and creating a wholesome acai bowl may be a little too time consuming on some mornings so why not just blend up and make a delicious smoothie? Great to make when you are on the go - breakfast lunch or dinner! Method  Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Add more coconut water if the smoothie is too thick. Pour into a chilled glass, sprinkle with extra blueberries; enjoy!

TASTY ADDITIONS FOR A FABULOUS SMOOTHIE…

  • Peanut butter and banana - or any nut butter for that matter!

  • Oats and strawberries, muesli and dried fruit - a variety of combination that will add some extra crunch

  • Shaved coconut and honey

  • Add textural crunch to your bowl like flaked almonds, goji berries, mint, edible flowers, blueberries, strawberries

  • Adding greek yoghurt will give a great boost of protein to your day

SET YOUR INTENTIONS FOR A NEW SEASON

How are our diets? Are we watching what we eat? How fit are you? Do you want to be fitter? What do we do to keep our minds active? There are so many things to think about; sometimes it’s easier to put your own needs last but really - if we are not healthy and happy, what are we? Leading a healthy lifestyle is important for everyone, and we should try as hard as we can to maintain it. Feeling good in your skin is what we should all aim for.

I have always found starting small is the most achievable. Throwing myself into a whole new regime is not sustainable, but starting off slow and building up is what works for me. Small steps like walking the block, then the park, then the local sports oval is a great way to incorporate movement into your day and planning an active weekly catch up with friends is great for those whose motivation needs a little boost. Start small, make a plan and keep one promise to yourself each day, what will you do to welcome spring into your life?
